A. The organization where I am currently employed at is University of California San Diego Health (UC San Diego Health). The organizationâ€s mission is “to deliver outstanding patient care through commitment to the community, groundbreaking research, and inspired teaching” (UCSD, n.d.). This mission reflects the institutionâ€s dedication not only to providing high-quality patient care but also to advancing medical knowledge and educating future healthcare professionals. The organizationâ€s vision, “to create a healthier world – one life at a time – through science, new medicine and new cures” (UCSD, n.d.), emphasizes innovation and the pursuit of scientific discovery to improve health outcomes locally and globally. In addition, UC San Diego Healthâ€s core values include Commitment to Community, Caring Relationships, Health Equity, Integrity and Respect, and Innovation and Research. These values guide how care is delivered and shape the culture of the organization by encouraging collaboration, compassion, and continuous improvement.
Overall, the behaviors of leaders within the organization are largely congruent with the mission, vision, and values. Leaders frequently emphasize patient-centered care, collaboration among interdisciplinary teams, and the importance of maintaining respectful and supportive workplace relationships. In many situations, leaders demonstrate a commitment to integrity and accountability while encouraging staff to participate in quality improvement initiatives and innovative practices that enhance patient care. Additionally, the organizationâ€s focus on research and teaching is reflected through partnerships with academic programs, professional development opportunities, and evidence-based practice initiatives that promote continuous learning.
B. The mission, vision, and values of the University of California San Diego Health are highly congruent with the core values of the nursing profession. Nursing core values commonly include compassion, patient-centered care, integrity, advocacy, respect for human dignity, and a commitment to improving health outcomes. The organizationâ€s mission to deliver outstanding patient care through community commitment, research, and education aligns closely with the nursing professionâ€s dedication to promoting health, preventing illness, and supporting patients and families throughout the continuum of care. Nurses play a critical role in fulfilling this mission by providing direct patient care, coordinating interdisciplinary services, and advocating for patient needs.
Similarly, the organizationâ€s vision to create a healthier world through science, new medicine, and innovative cures reflects the nursing professionâ€s commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous improvement in healthcare delivery. Nurses contribute to this vision by integrating research findings into clinical practice, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and supporting innovations that enhance patient outcomes. This alignment supports a culture of lifelong learning and professional development within nursing practice.
The organizationâ€s core values also strongly reflect nursing values. Commitment to community and health equity aligns with the nursing professionâ€s focus on addressing social determinants of health and advocating for equitable access to care. Caring relationships and respect mirror the ethical principles that guide nursing interactions with patients, families, and colleagues. Integrity is central to both the organization and the nursing profession, as nurses are expected to practice ethically and maintain accountability in their clinical decision-making. Finally, the emphasis on innovation and research supports the advancement of nursing knowledge and encourages nurses to contribute to improvements in patient care.  Overall, the mission, vision, and values of UC San Diego Health closely align with nursing core values and reinforce the important role nurses play in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care
C. The mission, vision, and values of the University of California San Diego Health are largely consistent with my personal philosophy of nursing. My philosophy emphasizes patient-centered care, compassion, ethical practice, and a commitment to improving health outcomes through collaboration and evidence-based practice. Similar to the organizationâ€s mission of delivering outstanding patient care through commitment to the community, research, and education, I believe that nurses play a vital role in supporting patients not only through direct care but also through advocacy, education, and coordination of services. The organizationâ€s focus on caring relationships and respect also aligns closely with my belief that trust, empathy, and dignity are foundational to effective nursing practice and positive patient experiences.
The vision of creating a healthier world through science, new medicine, and innovation also reflects an important component of my philosophy. I believe that nurses must remain committed to lifelong learning and the integration of research into clinical practice to continuously improve patient outcomes. Innovation and research are essential to advancing healthcare and ensuring that patients receive the most effective and current treatments available. This perspective aligns well with the organizationâ€s emphasis on scientific discovery and improving health through new knowledge.
While there is strong alignment overall, one area where my personal philosophy places additional emphasis is on the importance of work-life balance and supporting the well-being of healthcare providers. I believe that when nurses are supported, respected, and able to maintain personal well-being, they are better equipped to provide compassionate and high-quality patient care. Although the organizationâ€s values of caring relationships and respect support this idea, my personal philosophy places an even greater focus on fostering healthy work environments that promote staff resilience, professional growth, and emotional support. Overall, the organizationâ€s mission, vision, and values align closely with my philosophy of nursing, particularly in their shared commitment to patient-centered care, ethical practice, and continuous improvement in healthcare delivery.

The name of the organization I chose is called Community Health System.
-Mission (why we exist): Community Health System exists to better the lives of all those we serve.
-Vision (what we aspire to achieve): We will be the trusted health leader, opening new doors to educate, innovate and expand our care and services across the Valley.
-Values (what we stand for): Humanity- to do right by all people. Duty- to care, teach and serve is our calling. Excellence- to reach beyond expectations in all we do. Ingenuity- to fearlessly forge new paths forward.

Knowing that they genuinely provide a space for students and even to employees by providing incentives to continue education (even providing their own nursing program), a lot of what they promise stands true. Of course, though, there will always be a business aspect to running so many facilities that may sometimes get in the way of their values. Although with the main location Community Regional Medical Center being the only level one trauma center from Sacramento and Los Angeles it becomes almost impossible to serve the amount of people who go there. However, management that I have come across in this system appeared to be fit for their position and did do their best for all.
 
B. To what extent are the mission, vision, and values congruent with nursing core values? 
Community health system (CHS) mission to “better the lives of all those we serve” and its focus on access, excellence, and community care are congruent with nursing core values of compassion, advocacy, and patient-centered care. The focus on community benefit and comprehensive care aligns with community nursingâ€s focus on disease prevention, health promotion, and addressing social determinants of health.
 
C. How were the mission, vision, and values similar to and different from your personal philosophy of nursing? 
The mission, vision, and values essentially align with my personal philosophy of nursing. In becoming a nurse, it was vital to serve my community and continuing ongoing education to consistently provide great care. The values are quite thoughtful in providing humanity, duty, excellence, and ingenuity. In understanding that in order to provide exceptional care we must understand that there are new ways of doing it, it is ever changing.
