Hello everyone
One source of big data that I am likely to use in my future advanced practice nursing role is the electronic health record (EHR), particularly systems such as Epic. Additionally, artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT can be integrated with large healthcare datasets to support clinical decision-making. While AI tools are not primary sources of big data, they function as technologies that analyze and synthesize large datasets to generate meaningful clinical insights.
The EHR contains extensive patient-level and population-level data, including demographics, medical history, diagnoses, medication lists, allergies, laboratory and diagnostic results, vital signs, and clinical notes. These data provide a comprehensive view of patient health over time. AI tools such as ChatGPT can assist in synthesizing this information, supporting clinical reasoning, and generating patient education when used appropriately and securely.
Data from this source can impact client care in several ways. First, big data improves clinical decision-making by allowing providers to identify patterns, trends, and abnormalities in patient data, which can lead to earlier diagnoses and timely interventions. Second, it supports personalized and preventive care by identifying high-risk patients and enabling targeted interventions, such as education and chronic disease management, to reduce complications and hospital readmissions. Third, big data enhances care coordination and patient outcomes by facilitating communication among interdisciplinary teams, ensuring continuity of care, and reducing medical errors.
The advanced practice nurse plays a critical role in data stewardship by ensuring that health data are accurate, complete, and securely documented. APRNs must adhere to ethical and legal standards, including protecting patient privacy and maintaining confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations. Additionally, APRNs are responsible for critically evaluating data and AI-generated information to ensure it is evidence-based, clinically appropriate, and used to support safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.

Introduction
The information and communication technologies have enhanced the delivery of care by healthcare professionals. They bring clinical settings finer, more efficient and collaborative. With the ever-increasing advanced practice role of the nurses, the application of big data in nursing is of paramount importance in enhancing nursing outcome and nursing decision making. Thus, the Internet familiarity with digital systems as a nursing aspect is mandatory.
Primary Source of Big Data in Practice
The electronic health record (EHR) system is also a significant part of the big data in the advanced practice. EHR is a health record that has the history of a particular patient. It is a collection of the many clinical sites and continuous clinical data of an encounter between the provider and patient.
Key Information Retrieved from EHRs
The EHR contains demographics of patients, clinical history, diagnoses, medications and labs, and care plans of patients of different providers. Moreover, this information improves the continuity of care and the clinical accuracy.
Ways EHR Data Enhances Care
Additionally, client care is improved in numerous aspects when data about the EHR is utilized. First, it assists clinicians to identify faster and easier the alterations in health condition of a patient (Ahmad et al, 2023). Early transformations result in timely health interventions. Second, the information in an EHR is evidence-based and can be compared to the clinically based standards of the data of a patient. Finally, EHR improves communication among clinicians dealing with patients. Shared data will reduce the amount of testing and improve coordination of care.
APRNs†Responsibilities in Data Management
Data stewardship involves privacy and ethical application of patient data and accuracy of data documentation. APRNs rectify records and educate other nurses concerning data safety and patient data integrity.
Conclusion
Digital health technologies and data analytics are of the essence in the provision and enhancement of quality patient care services. Electronic health records (EHRs) big data analytics can contribute to the safety of clinical decision-making, communication, and clinical decision-making among healthcare providers in a positive way. Consequently, advance practice nurses can make a contribution to the security of the information and responsible utilization to improve care outcomes in patients.
