Normal layer | Layers that don’t necessarily affect the final output of your file, although they do remain unchanged if they are flattened.

Mask layer | A transparent layer that masks the image in the bitmap layer. It remains unchanged unless the bitmap layer is flattened.
Compensation layer | A type of mask layer that affects all pixels on the image window by adding color correction, tone correction, and other image-manipulation effects to the image.
You can use multiple masks on a single layer in order to create multiple effects. For example, you can use a mask to create a gradient from black to white that appears as a shadow on the layer. You can also apply a mask to the image, thereby removing the background in the layer and revealing the final image.
In the following sections, I take a quick walk through all the different ways you can add layers to your images.
Adding a bitmap layer
In Photoshop, when you save a file for the first time, you may notice that the word flattened appears in the file name. It’s called a bitmap layer because it contains a bitmap image of the final picture.
When you open a new file or create a new layer in a closed file, you can create a new bitmap layer. To do so, choose Layers⇒New. A new, empty layer appears with a blank window, as shown in Figure 15-1.

When you create a new bitmap layer, the window appears with a background color. The color of the background is the color of the layer’s background. You can also apply a new gradient, a fill, a pattern, or an image to that background.
This is probably the most common use for creating a new layer. Create a new layer with the New Layer button (it looks like a circle with an up-and-down arrow) and then click the bitmap icon at the top of the Layers panel.
You may notice a black line running horizontally across your image. If this happens, it’s fine; it’s just your screen resolution.
