Directions
Collaboration Café: Reflect on Knowledge
Step 1: Review the scenario below.
As an advanced nursing leader in a healthcare environment, you are faced with a team conflict that requires excellent conflict prevention and management skills. Your role is identifying the most effective approach to managing and/or preventing your assigned team conflict. Your assigned team conflict is based on the first letter of your last name, as shown in the chart below.
Last NameTeam Conflict
A – G
Disagreement over Client Care Protocols: The nursing and medical teams on an inpatient hospital unit have differing opinions on the best client care protocols. The nursing team advocates for a more holistic approach, while the medical team prefers a more clinical and evidence-based method. The disagreement escalates, affecting their collaboration and communication. You must mediate the conflict, ensuring that client care remains the top priority and that both teams feel heard and respected.
H – M
Communication Breakdown Between Departments: A conflict arises between the administrative staff and the clinical team due to a lack of clear communication regarding client scheduling and resource allocation. The administrative staff feels overwhelmed by last-minute changes, while the clinical team feels unsupported. You must address the conflict to ensure both teams are aligned and working together effectively.
N – S
Impending Signs of Conflict: The surgical team notices that the emergency department is consistently excluded from resource allocation and client prioritization discussions. The emergency department’s morale is visibly declining, and there are signs of frustration and disengagement. You must recognize these impending signs of conflict and intervene early, addressing any underlying issues before they escalate to full-blown conflict.
T – Z
Resource Allocation Dispute: A conflict arises between the radiology and oncology departments over the allocation of limited resources, such as medical equipment and staff. The radiology department feels it should have priority access due to the urgency of its cases, while the oncology department argues that it needs the resources for critical care. You must mediate the conflict, ensuring both departments understand the rationale behind the decisions and feel supported.
Step 2: Answer all questions below with explanation and detail. No scholarly sources are required.
Consider your assigned team conflict. What is the underlying cause of the conflict, and what are the potential consequences if it is not effectively addressed?
Effective leaders do not navigate challenges in isolation. What resources can you utilize to help you effectively address this team conflict?
Leadership competencies are foundational to advanced nursing practice. What American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) Nurse Leader Core Competencies are specifically relevant to managing your assigned team conflict? Explain.
Reflect on how a leaderâ€s approach to managing conflict can help foster trust and strengthen team dynamics. What strategies can you employ to establish and maintain trust and unify the team while navigating the conflict management and/or prevention process?
